Start from the Venetian sea fortress of Koules constructed by the Venetians in order to protect the city’s harbor from invaders. Its original name was Rocca a Mare. Today it is open to the public.
Go up to the 25th August Street, which is also the main artery to the city center with the well-preserved neoclassical buildings and various tourist shops.
Your first stop must be at the magnificent church of Apostolos Titos, probably the oldest church in Heraklion and one of the most important monuments in the city center, on 25th August Street with a very beautiful square around it.
Next to the square you will find the Loggia. It is one of the most elegant and imposing monuments of the period during the Venetian occupation in Heraklion. Today, the City Hall of Heraklion is housed here.
You are already in the busiest part of the city so don’t miss the chance to try the traditional bougatsa with the view of the Morosini Fountain. The ornate Venetian fountain with the four lion heads, alias Lion Square. Its drinking water quenches the thirst of locals and passersby to this day.
In the very same square, you can spot the Basilica of Agios Markos, once the protector of the island over the Venetian rule. Built in 1239, in 1669 it was turned into a Mosque by the Ottomans, while since 1956 it has been functioning as a Municipal Art Gallery.
Visit the Herakleion Central Market in 1866 Street for shops with travel items and goods, fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices, cheese, butchers and, in addition, small cafes and restaurants. The central market of Heraklion was the place where erst the people of the city could satisfy their daily needs by procuring all kinds of products.
