We continue our route to the fishing village of Plaka where we will be enchanted by the high view of Spinalonga. The island’s ancient name was Kalydona. The Venetians named it Spinalonga, which translates to long thorn. Spinalonga is an uninhabited island of 85 acres in the picturesque and internationally renowned for its beauty, Elounda bay, and is the second most visited place in Crete after Knossos.
The gulf of Elounda, due to its salinity, yielded sufficient quantities of salt, which was controlled by the Venetians. In order to protect their interests, they built a strong wall around the perimeter of the island. In 1903, the lepers of Crete were brought here, who remained isolated till 1957, when eventually, a cure for their disease was discovered. Today the island is a revered and respected archaeological site. You can visit Spinaloga by crossing the 800 meter distance, that separates the small island from the fishing village of Plaka, by boat.
We continue our tour towards Elounda; a microcosm of luxury.
Elounda is a constant choice for presidents, prime ministers, and VIPs, with unique resorts like private beaches, marinas, golf courses and high-end service.
On our way, we will meet the salt flats of Elounda which were an important source of income during the Venetian rule, supplying almost all of Europe with salt.
In the “Canali” location of Elounda, three windmills have been preserved, classified as historical monuments.
A visit to the Windmills is a must.
Our next stop is the city of Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi, built on seven hills overlooking the bay of Mirabello. It will enchant you with its character and its small, winding streets.
The trademark of the city is Lake Voulismeni, which has been associated with dozens of legends that make it even more magical.
Our excursion will end at the traditional village of Kritsa at an altitude of about 365 meters, one of the oldest villages of Crete that still retains its old architectural features to a significant extent. Stroll through the beautiful cobbled streets, with their traditional buildings and musky courtyards, flowering bougainvillea, characteristic arches, shops selling local goods and folk art, and traditional cafes.
